Salsa and Latin Jazz lovers would be very pleased to know that Yvette is the lead singer for “El Groove” – an 8-piece Salsa/Latin Jazz Ensemble that has been very popular in the Singapore Latin music and party scene.
An 8-piece ensemble consisting of Yvette on vocals backed by 2 percussions, 3 horns, 1 bass, 1 keyboard, this lively and energetic band was originally established by their late bandleader - American saxophone player/teacher Khalid Caesar. After his demise, the band has carried on building on the legacy Khalid has left behind.
An important component in this band’s success is Yvette’s fluency in the Spanish language, which she grew up speaking with her Spanish mestiso father. Her facility in the Spanish language has enabled this band to include intricate and authentic salsa and Latin music in their repertoire. As Yvette said, “You cannot feel and express the fervour and beauty of Latin music unless you really speak this language. If you are just memorizing all the words by rote, how can you express the nuances of the language? I’m a firm believer that you must be able to speak the language of a song you are singing, in order to be able to fully express it!”
Now, El Groove is one of the leading salsa bands in Singapore.
Brought together by their love for salsa and Latin jazz music, among the many local and international musicians that have performed as members or guests are: Mario Serio, Alina Ramirez, Redwan Ali, Robert Seng, Chris Robinson, Mei Sheum, Rizal Sanip, Vickness Veerapan, Joe Jayaveeran, Navin, Kelvin Kew, Jonathan Sim, Jojo Martinez, Colin Yong, Greg Lyons, Mario Lopez, Marcus Dengate, Teo Boon Chye, Lachlan Pendlebury, Fredi Sondenberger, Reggie Pereira, Muhammed Noor, etc.
